The happiness of a Pokémon alters various tidbits of
gameplay. From effecting the attack power of "Return" and "Frustration",
to defining breedability, happiness is something that you should keep an
eye on.
But just how happy is your Pokémon? You
can't look at your Pokémon's stats, and see "Happiness" listed right
under Attack and Defense. In fact, it's impossible to pinpoint the
exact stat value of Happiness without a bit of work. However, there
is a way to find out the approximate range of your Pokémon's Happiness,
as well as how to lower it and raise it.
In Goldenrod City, there is a girl who will tell you how happy
your Pokémon is. This doesn't tell the exact numeric value
of Happiness, but you can use the chart below to determine the approximate
value based on what the girl tells you about your Pokémon's Happiness.
| Value |
Girl: |
Notes: |
| 250~255 |
It looks really happy! It must love you a lot. |
|
| 200~249 |
I get the feeling that it really trusts you. |
Pokémon that evolves through Happiness evolve at this stage,
when the value is 218 or higher. |
| 150~199 |
It's friendly towards you. It looks sort of happy. |
|
| 100~149 |
It's quite cute. |
"Return" can be gotten if it is more than this state. |
| 50~99 |
You should treat it better. It's not used to you. |
A Wild Pokemon starts at 70. However, catching it with a Friend
Ball will raise it to 200. (Green Apricorns make the
Friend Ball.)
|
| 0~49 |
It doesn't seem to like you at all. It looks mean. |
"Frustration" can be gotten. |
So, how do you raise or lower this?

*In Pokémon Crystal version, when you catch a Pokémon, its
"catch location" is remembered. There's an old lady in Cianwood City
who can tell you were your Pokémon was caught. This data will
be lost if the Pokémon is traded to a non-Crystal Version.
This is important because if a Pokémon raises a level which in its
"catch location," then its Happiness will raise double what's listed
on the chart above!
How does the "Haircut" effect your Pokémon? There are three
values, and you know which value your Pokémon's Happiness is raise
by the message that the Hair Cut Brother says:

So, what are the best ways to raise Happiness? Well, Doping
items, such as Calcium and Iron, also raise Effort Value, so that's raising
two things with one item. You can use up to 10 of each Doping item,
raising Happiness up to 50 points per 10 Doping items used. With
5 different types of Doping items, you can raise the Happiness up to 250
points or higher, exceeding evolutionary requirements.
However, another way is to battle the Elite Four and Lance.
You'll also get EXP and money as well.
Getting your Pokémon's hair cut or taking it to Gary's
sister each work only once a day, and aren't really worth the time or money.
As mentioned
above, some Pokémon only evolve if they are happy. The unusable
Pokémon number 000 evolves by Happiness, evolving into a Nidoran(m)!
